October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives with the goal of raising awareness about cybersecurity and increasing the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident. National Cybersecurity Awareness Month takes place each October and is sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

During the month of October, HCC is hosting several cybersecurity-related events for students, including a field trip to the MSP Forensics Lab in Pikesville, MD, a Forensics Demo at the Washington County Public Library, and two showings of the film WarGames.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 31 percent of all identity theft complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission in 2012 were filed by young adults. Students are encouraged to review this list of tips and resources provided by DHS.
