Student Stories: How Taylor Barnes Turned Survival Into Purpose

Cancer forced Taylor to step away from college.
After 5 years in remission, she’s back at HCC chasing her dream career.
When Taylor Barnes first enrolled at HCC in 2018, she never imagined her journey would be interrupted by a life-changing diagnosis. That year, Taylor was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin's Lymphoma, an advanced cancer of the lymphatic system. The road ahead was grueling, but through it all, she found unexpected inspiration.
“I met the most amazing healthcare professionals who made my difficult journey more bearable,” Taylor said. “After reaching the milestone of five years in remission, I made it a goal to follow in their footsteps and provide the same comfort and support to others.”
Now back at HCC and pursuing a degree in radiography, Taylor has set her sights on becoming a radiation therapist, a career where she can stand beside patients facing the same challenges she did.
Taylor says HCC has been outstanding in preparing her for the future. The curriculum aligns directly with her goals, and her professors challenge her to think critically and step outside of her comfort zone—experiences that have boosted her confidence as both a student and an individual. She especially values the support services available on campus including advising, tutoring, and counseling.
“What truly makes HCC stand out is its incredible support system. If there is one thing I have learned here, it’s that this is a school dedicated to helping students achieve their goals.”
Taylor also recognizes the donors whose generosity makes stories like hers possible. “Their support has lifted a financial burden, which allows me to focus on my studies and pursue my dream career,” she said. “I am so grateful for the opportunities this scholarship has opened for me.”
For Taylor, surviving cancer was only the beginning. Now, she’s building a future where she can turn her own survival into a source of healing and hope for others.
