John Williamson was recently reappointed by Governor Hogan’s Office to serve another six-year term on the Hagerstown Community College board of trustees. He has been a member of the board since 2012, and is currently serving as the vice chair.
Hagerstown Community College’s Women’s Hawk Volleyball Team will host a fundraising event to benefit local and national heroes on Monday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m., at the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center (ARCC) on campus. In honor of all of all veterans and those currently serving, the Hawks will play the Northern Virginia Community College Nighthawks on Monday evening, with all proceeds from the game donated to Homes For Our Troops.
The first class of correction academy students at Hagerstown Community College recently graduated. The 37-day training program was provided by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. The academy training consists of academics, which covers use of force, suicide prevention, cultural diversity, ethics, and crisis de-escalation techniques; and practical skills, which includes disturbance control, defensive tactics, chemical agents, restraints, and searching techniques.
Hagerstown Community College students Makayla Smith, of Mercersburg, and Heather Wallen, of Hagerstown, recently volunteered their time to direct a play, adapted from James Matthew Barrie’s book, “Peter Pan,” on Thursday, Sept. 6, performed by the residents of The Potomac Center.
The fall semester is underway at Hagerstown Community College, but there is still time to register for late-start fall classes. Shorter sessions begin Sept. 10, Oct. 3, and Oct. 22. A variety of traditional and online classes are offered in blocks during these shorter sessions, allowing students to take classes back to back.
Tech Team Solutions of Hagerstown has partnered with the Internship and Job Services Office at HCC to provide learning opportunities outside of the classroom for students studying cybersecurity and information technology. HCC alumni and classmates, Paul McAllister and Dave Cason, are the owners of Tech Team Solutions.

The Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association will host the U.S. Navy Commodores as part of its annual Red, White and Blue Summer Concert Series, on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 6:15 p.m., in HCC’s Alumni Amphitheater. The U.S. Navy Commodores feature 18 of the Navy’s premier jazz and big band musicians playing under the direction of Senior Chief Musician William C. Mulligan.
Hagerstown Community College recently held its sixth annual TRIO Upward Bound Reception. The event represents an end-of-the-year celebration for the TRIO Upward Bound students and their achievements during the 2017-2018 school year.
The English and Humanities Division at HCC recently announced that dancer Liz Fink-Rakoski has joined HCC’s dance department as an adjunct faculty member. At HCC, Rakoski will be teaching jazz and beginning ballet courses, exposing students to current jazz dance trends and upholding traditional ballet standards.
