Hagerstown Community College held its 69th annual commencement on Saturday, May 14, in the Athletic, Recreation, and Community Center at HCC. HCC President Guy Altieri and members of the board of trustees awarded 686 degrees and certificates to the 2016 graduating class, before a crowd of more than 2,000 people. The HCC dean of students reports that 424 students received associate degrees in the transfer curricula, designed for students planning to continue their education at a four-year institution.
Michael Kipe and Judith Kofoet, both of Hagerstown, each were presented the 2016 Hagerstown Community College Alumni Association Outstanding Alumnus Award at HCC’s recent Honors Convocation. These awards are presented for meritorious service to and support of the HCC Alumni Association for the last 50 or more years.
Hagerstown Community College has been named by the U.S. Department of Education as one of 44 colleges across the country to participate in an experiment that will allow high school students attending college to be eligible to access Federal Pell Grants.
Hagerstown Community College recently held its annual adult education commencement ceremony. Student speakers at the event included Esteban Vales, of Sharpsburg, to represent the National External Diploma Program (NEDP), and Amanda Myers, of Hagerstown, who represented the General Equivalency Development (GED) program.
An induction ceremony was held on May 9 to recognize the new PTK members from summer and fall of 2015, and spring of 2016. Professor Loretta Thornhill was a guest speaker during the ceremony.
The second class of students in the STEMM Technical Middle College (STMC) at Hagerstown Community College will graduate from HCC on Saturday. Fifteen students were recognized at a special ceremony on Tuesday for their significant accomplishments in earning associate degrees from HCC at the same time they are each completing high school.
Hagerstown Community College will host the annual Public Safety Awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m., in the Kepler Center on HCC’s main campus. The public is invited to attend this event. Light refreshments will be served.
Hagerstown Community College and the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office will hold a workshop entitled “Motorcycle Safety Refresher for Experienced Riders,” on Saturday, May 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., in HCC’s Career Programs Building, room 232. The cost is $8 per participant.
HCC will hold its 69th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at 9:30 a.m., in the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center (ARCC). Students who are participating in this year's ceremony are expected to attend a Commencement Rehearsal on Friday, May 13, at 5:45 p.m., in the ARCC. Afterwards, students are invited to attend a Graduation Party at 7 p.m., in the ARCC lobby. Caps and gowns are available for pick up in the Campus Store or at the Commencement Rehearsal.
Hagerstown Community College recently recognized Stacey McGee, assistant professor of business and accounting, as the faculty of the year for 2015. McGee began teaching in 1999 as an adjunct faculty member at both HCC and Frostburg University. She became a full time faculty member at HCC in 2007.
