This Maryland approved program provides students with the required refresher training to reactivate an inactive Maryland Registered Nursing or Licensed Practical Nursing License. Students are expected to complete all three components at HCC to satisfy the programs overall requirements.

Nurse Refresher Screening
This course is designed as a screening tool to assist RNs who are interested in applying for the Nurse Refresher program. Potential Nurse Refresher candidates will complete a background check and verification of their nursing licensure status through the Maryland Board of Nursing. Refunds will not be issued to students who fail to meet eligibility guidelines or withdraw from the program prior to or during the course. All background checks are completed online using Sterling. Once students register for the Nurse Refresher Screening, they will receive an e-mail with further instructions to complete the Background Investigation. This course is the first in a three-part series designed for registered nurses to reinstate an inactive Maryland nursing license and consists of a hybrid class with 40 classroom hours and online course work totaling 80 hours of content. Areas of concentration include: delivery of care utilizing the nursing process; medication calculation and administration; adult medical/surgical nursing; as well as current issues, trends, and nursing practices. Students are expected to attend and participate in the online class on a weekly basis for the online component. Successful completion of the course requires an 80% or higher score on four exams and completion of 20 quizzes with an average score of 80%. This course is the pre-requisite for the Nurse Refresher Course III - Clinical Practice. Concurrent enrollment in, or prior completion of, Nurse Refresher Classroom Theory is required. During skills lab, students review the basic skills needed to provide nursing care, such as sterile techniques, wound care, central line dressing changes, IV and catheter insertion, medication administration, and NG tube placement. Lab supplies are included in the cost of the class.

This course is designed for students who desire instruction-guided direction in preparing for the required dosage calculation exam for the nursing programs, LPN and RN. Successful completion of Nurse Refresher Course I - Classroom Theory and II - Skills Lab are required before participating in this clinical course. The course is designed to provide clinical application of the knowledge and skills gained from the classroom. Students are required to complete 60 clinical hours in a setting with a facility-assigned preceptor. Requirements include an inactive Maryland license, AHA-BLS certification, criminal background check, physical exam, and immunizations. Clinical placements will be coordinated through the Allied Health Program Manager. Due to the limited MBON-approved clinical locations currently affiliated with the college, students may have to wait for a placement to become available. WSCE will make every effort to place students quickly.
