HCC inducts five into Hall of Fame

Five individuals were recently inducted into the Hagerstown Community College Athletic Hall of Fame. Athletic Director Amy Sterner presided over the annual event, which was held in the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center (ARCC) on the campus of HCC.

Inductees of the HCC 24th Class of the Hall of Fame include Anthony Clement, Kenneth Giles, Alicia (Myers) Henson, Rebecca (Morgan) Laughman, and Elizabeth (Ross) Smith.

Anthony Clement – Cross Country, Indoor & Outdoor Track (2005–2007)
A standout distance runner, Anthony “Tony” Clement excelled in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track for the Hawks. A two-time national qualifier and All-Region and All-MD JUCO honoree, he set HCC records in the mile (4:10.56) and 1500 meters (3:47.38) and earned NJCAA All-American honors in 2006 and 2007. After graduating, he continued his career at the University of Oklahoma, earning All-Big 12 honors and helping set a school relay record. Clement later competed in five USA Track & Field Championships and now works at HCC as an ARCC Associate and is training to run competitively in the master’s division.

Kenneth Giles – Track & Field, Middle Distance & Relays (1983–1985)
Kenneth Giles earned NJCAA All-American honors in 1985 with an eighth-place finish in the 800 meters at the national indoor meet. After graduating from Hagerstown Junior College, he went on to the University of North Florida, where he broke the school’s indoor 800-meter record and earned NAIA All-American status. Giles built a storied coaching career at Norfolk State University, leading the Spartans to 40 MEAC team titles and mentoring over 100 individual conference champions and 15 All-Americans. A 46-time MEAC Coach of the Year honoree, Giles continues to serve as director of track and field operations at NSU.

Alicia (Myers) Henson – Basketball (2006–2008)
A standout shooting guard and team captain, Alicia Henson set HCC records for free throw accuracy (85% in a season and 81.9% over her career) and ranked among the top five nationally in free throw percentage. She also ranked second in HCC history for three-point percentage and earned MD JUCO All-Tournament and All-Conference honors. During her two seasons, the Hawks posted a 49–12 record, tying the program mark for most wins over two years and achieving a No. 6 national ranking. Henson, a Phi Theta Kappa honors graduate, went on to earn degrees from Shippensburg University and the University of Iowa. She now teaches mathematics at HCC, where she has also served as an assistant women’s basketball coach.

Rebecca (Morgan) Laughman – Volleyball (2008–2010)
A dominant outside hitter, Rebecca Laughman set the HCC record for career kills with 906 and earned First Team All-Region 20, All-MD JUCO, and Region 20 Tournament MVP honors in both 2008 and 2009. She was named an NJCAA First Team All-American in 2008 and Honorable Mention in 2009. After graduating, she continued her career at the University of North Carolina Pembroke, where she earned All-Conference and All-State honors. Returning to HCC, Laughman joined the volleyball coaching staff in 2017 and became head coach in 2019, leading the team to a 30–8 record. She now teaches mathematics at Fayetteville Elementary School and lives in Shippensburg, Pa.

Elizabeth (Ross) Smith – Track & Field (2008–2012)
A four-time NJCAA All-American, Elizabeth Smith excelled in the shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin for the Hawks. She set the HCC record in the shot put with a throw of 46’6.75” while finishing second at the 2011 NJCAA Indoor National Championships and was a four-time national qualifier. Continuing her career at Shippensburg University, she became the school’s shot put record holder and an NCAA Division II national qualifier. Now co-owner of Lion Mentality Apparel and a staff member in the Chambersburg Area School District, Smith lives in Scotland, Pa., with her husband Grant (a 2024 inductee of the HCC Hall of Fame) and their children.
