HCC receives $25K scholarship donation

The Hagerstown Community College Foundation recently received a donation of $25,000 from Alfred Fiedler, Jr., in memory of his wife, Georgeann M. Fiedler, who worked as a nurse for 54 years.

The money will be used to create the Georgeann M. Heidecker-Fiedler Scholarship that will be awarded each year to an eligible first-year nursing student from Washington County.

While touring the nursing lab on a recent visit to HCC, Al Fiedler said that Georgeann raved about the nursing program at HCC, based on the success rates of its nursing graduates. He added that because she was a nurse and he had been a high school teacher, they wanted to do something to better society.

In reference to the scholarship that has been created in his wife’s honor, he said, “This is for you, Georgeann, with all my love.”

Heidecker-Fiedler was a graduate of the Maryland General Hospital School of Nursing and earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and an MBA from The University of Baltimore. She worked as a nurse and in administration for the University of Maryland Medical System at Kernan and St. Joseph Hospitals. She was also a team nurse for the Baltimore Ravens for 10 years.

For more information on the scholarship, contact the HCC College Advancement Office at 240-500-2348, or visit www.hagerstowncc.edu/hcc-foundation.
