Transferring to HCC
Transferring to HCC
Thinking About Transferring?
Hagerstown Community College (HCC) follows Maryland's transfer and general education policies established by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. To learn more, review the HCC Catalog.
Transferring Credits to HCC
To have previous college credits evaluated for transfer, students seeking a degree or certificate at HCC must:
- Apply for admission to HCC
- Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended and any applicable military transcripts to the Records Office.
- Submit a Transfer Evaluation Request Form. A review of the transcripts will not be completed until all documents have been received and the Transfer Evaluation Request Form has been submitted.
Transfer evaluations begin only after all required documents and forms have been received.
How Transfer Credit is Evaluated
Transfer credit may be awarded when one or more of the following conditions are met:
- Coursework was completed at an institution that is regionally accredited by a recognized higher education accrediting commission.
- The coursework is covered by an HCC articulation agreement with a business, school, or industry partner.
- Military training and coursework appear on a Joint Services Transcript (JST) and have been reviewed and recommended for credit by the American Council on Education (ACE).
- Coursework completed at institutions holding national or specialized accreditation recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) may be considered on a case-by-case basis in consultation with the appropriate academic department.
Credits from regionally accredited colleges and universities are applied toward a student's chosen program when they align with program requirements.
Military Credit
HCC evaluates military coursework and training documented on a Joint Services Transcript (JST). Basic training may be awarded as personal health and fitness credit, and additional military training may be evaluated for program-specific credit based on ACE recommendations and academic program requirements.
International Coursework
If you completed college coursework outside the United States:
- Submit a course-by-course evaluation in English from World Education Services (WES).
- If your transcripts were evaluated by another agency, contact the Registrar's Office at 240-500-2341 to determine whether the evaluation can be accepted.
- HCC may accept evaluations from agencies approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
Prior Learning and Exam Credit
HCC accepts a variety of non-traditional credit sources, including:
- Advanced Placement (AP)
- College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
- DSST examinations
- Other approved prior learning assessments
Official score reports must be submitted for evaluation. Students are encouraged to complete all credit evaluations before registering for classes.
Reverse Transfer
Students who previously attended HCC and later transferred to a four-year institution may be eligible for Reverse Transfer, allowing earned credits to be applied toward completion of an HCC degree or certificate.
To participate, students must:
- Have previously earned college credits at HCC.
- Submit official transcripts from their four-year institution.
- Have transcripts evaluated through a program evaluation process.
- Complete at least 25% of the required credits for the degree or certificate at HCC.
- Submit a Reverse Transfer Credit Application Request.
Transcript reviews begin only after all required documents and the application form have been received.
Students should also verify that their four-year institution participates in HCC's Reverse Transfer program.
